I have been lighting shows and performances for over 30 years. Starting as a freelance electrician, then working at the Royal Court Theatre designing shows along the way. Then I met Phelim, Lee and Julian from Improbable and they asked me to run away on tour. The first productions were 70 Hill Lane and Animo, and this was the start of a long collaboration; we made shows touring the UK and around the world, including Theatre of Blood, Lost Without Words (National theatre), The Hanging Man (West Yorkshire Playhouse) Lifegame (National Theatre, UK Tour, La Jolla Playhouse, Off Broadway, Brisbane, US Tours) Spirit (Royal Court, UK, US Tours, Sydney Opera House, New York Theatre Workshop.
For the National Theatre of Scotland I’ve lit Black Watch, The Bacchae, 365, Granite, and Men Should Weep.
Opera includes Pirates of Penzance for Scottish opera, Pelleas et Mellisande for the Los Angeles Philharmonic (Walt Disney Concert Hall). I have also been a regular lighting designer at Opera Holland Park, lighting 30 operas there over the course of a decade. I’ve lit numerous classical concerts for Esa-Pekka Salonen.
Other theatre work includes The Caretaker (Everyman Liverpool, West End, Adelaide Festival, US Tour) The Village Social (National Theatre of Wales), Riflemind, Alex (West End), Through a Glass Darkly, When the Rain Stops Falling (Almeida Theatre), Thief of Baghdad (Royal Opera House).
For the last six years I’ve had the good fortune to light the Cbeebies Christmas show for the BBC!
